Using a combination of object manipulation, stop-frame animation and a comedie humaine performance style, this physical Orwellian comedy gives glimpses of how we are starting to lose our will as individuals to a larger worldly pressure. Paraphernalia asks the question: how much do we need and how much are we forced to ‘want’ in the modern world? Created and performed by Commonwealth award winner, Jacqueline van Meygaarden and Jacques Lecoq graduates, Andrea van Meygaarden and Daniel Robinson.

Suckle is a collision between man and animal, performer and audience, site and subject. It is an ensemble work, using masks, video projection, object, voice, body and architecture. Suckle is an animal at the breast, a carcass on the highway, the crowd at the scene of violence. It is the creature we carry in us, suppressing its desires. We build cities and roads, fortifying ourselves. Nature is a casualty. What nurtures us when the milk runs dry, when we can’t suckle any longer?

If you’d never seen the sky, how far would you go to see something that ‘was blue, sometimes?’ Directed by Sanjin Muftic, Under the Stars, Above the Tree takes you where a tree has overgrown the world, and people have forgotten the sky, except as a badly told legend. It’s enough to inspire a boy to leave his family on a quest to see it. Through shadows, puppets and multimedia, this show tells a lyrical story about what we look for… and what we find.

Playroom: Wed 3rd : 21h00; Fri 5th:18h00; Sat 6th 16h00

Suddenly (her) life confronts you1.jpgSUDDENLY HER LIFE CONFRONTS YOU
Jacqui Singer

active workshop3ACTIVE PUPPETS TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Visual Performance is growing in popularity and impact in South Africa. It is winning competitive contemporary art events (Spier Contemporary 2007) and growing as commercially viable production (evidenced by productions like the Lion King). Puppetry is a powerful tool for social development is underutilized in South Africa, partly because of a lack of skills in this area. UNIMA SA’s Active Puppets program encourages a vital artistic, social and economic area of development in South Africa. All Active Puppets trainings are free of charge and wherever possible participant expenses are covered.

BACKGROUNDworkshop1
Active puppets began in 2006 with the second Out The Box Festival. As part of this project a program of performances were presented at the Langa community hall and workshops held at Guga S’Thebe Cultural Centre. In 2007 the program was expanded to include mentorship over a number of months of 5 groups of youth, using puppet theatre to develop social awareness and self-expression. In 2008 the project has further expanded and is now running formal training workshops. Active puppets currently has two parts to it: Activate and Proactive part 1, 2 and 3 outlined below.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of Active Puppets are:
To provide training in multimedia and puppetry skills to historically disadvantaged artists and youth
To spread the use of visual performance as a tool for communication and social development
To create employment in the creative arts
To encourage cross-cultural interaction via the medium of visual performance

apply to activate nowACTIVATE

This is an opportunity for young professional theatre-makers, community theatre groups, artists, and puppetry or visual theatre enthusiasts to meet, network and share ideas.

We invite young professional theatre makers, artists and people interested in puppetry and visual theatre to apply for this program. This is an exciting opportunity to see shows by top local and international artists, and to attend all sorts of educational and fun filled workshops by theatre professionals for free! This will be an intensive program where you will learn real skills for the future in working in visual theatre and puppetry, build new networks in the theatre industry, and have loads of fun!

ACTIVATE runs from Saturday 31st August – Monday 1st September then there will be a break and we will start again on Friday 5th September – Saturday 6th September in the Little Theatre Complex.

workshop2PROACTIVE
A Professional training in Visual Performance and puppetry.

PROACTIVE PART 1: April-September 2008
40-60 community members of community theatre groups from across Cape Town are being trained in story structure and writing, design, shadow theatre, multimedia, puppet building skills as well as manipulation, and physical performance. The groups are also trained in organisational formalisation (NPO registration, tax exemption etc.) fundraising and management. These trainings are achieved through three 3 day workshops which are attended by 20-30 representatives from 10 different groups. Between each workshop individual groups are trained by a ‘mentor’. Financial and managearial training is achieved through the submission of funding application forms to UNIMA SA and the management of a small budget given to them by UNIMA SA. The first two of these trainings have taken place, applications for budget have been submitted by the groups and mentoring has commenced. Each group will present their work at Showcase at Out The Box festival.

workshop 4PROACTIVE PART 2 January-March 2009
From amongst the 10 groups, 2groups (or 20 individuals) with particular interest and capacity in Visual Performance will be selected for further training. These groups will be intensively trained in both construction and performance as well as in project management, fundraising and business skills.

PROACTIVE PART 3 April- May 2009
A final selection will be made for 8 performers who will become the Active Puppets professional group. These performers will produce a show which will be toured to schools throughout the Western Cape. Members of the group will be trained in the administration and management of such a tour, leaving them able to operate fully economically independent of UNIMA SA.
